Design for X Ltd, also called Df{X}, is a UK-registered small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), incorporated in England and Wales. We deliver optimised, client-specific engineering solutions designed to maximise design performance, efficiency, and value across the product lifecycle. Df{X} business is named based after its own engineering approach. We have the ability to deploy a concise team of experienced engineers that are expert in a given domain but also multiskilled to understand overall requirements and how to provide an integrated solution.

Design for {X} in engineering is defined as a structured methodology where a product is designed with specific downstream objectives (“the X”) explicitly considered from the earliest development stages. Df{X} considers additional lifecycle requirements —such as manufacturability, reliability, cost, sustainability, and maintainability directly into the development phases.

What we do

Df{X} provides flexible engineering service models, tailored to client needs, ranging from embedded, hourly-based support within customer teams to fully defined, fixed-price project packages. Our core expertise lies in the design, analysis, testing, and certification of lightweight structures within the Aerospace and Defense sectors.

Our Solutions

Structures – Lightweight Design

DF{X} core business in Design & Analysis of lightweight structures, along with providing means of compliance for certification requirements. We refer as performance engineering or MIN/MAX approach as we target to optimize product with minimum weight and maximum performance, considering strength, endurance, and damage tolerance, as part of our set of {X}.

Rapid Prototyping & Fabrication

Df{X} rapid prototyping and fabrication unit supports internal development programmers as well as the procurement and supply of metallic and non-metallic components across a range of applications. This includes the manufacture of test specimens, proof-of-concept demonstrators, rapid prototyping, as well as the design and production of jigs, fixtures, and tooling to support manufacturing and testing activities

Research Initiatives & Collaborations

The Df{X} team actively participates in research initiatives and the advancement of technology readiness levels, working closely with academic institutions and industry end-users within collaborative research consortia. We also promote engagement with the education sector through activities such as guest lecturing, development of research dissemination initiatives, and involvement in programmes supporting STEM disciplines

NABLA-X

NABLA-X is a dedicated business unit established to support project management activities within Df{X}, while also extending its services to broader initiatives related to the development of business models and risk-sharing partnerships. The unit provides structured programme and project management capability to facilitate the execution of complex engineering and commercial activities, ensuring alignment between technical delivery, strategic objectives and collaborative partnership frameworks
